Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos (1909-1931) died of tuberculosis and her body was preserved by Carl Tanzler (1877-1952) who was one of her physicians. (b. July 31, 1909 – d. October 25, 1931; Key West, Florida, USA) Francisco Hoyos (1883-1934), aka Pancho Hoyos Aurora Milagro.. In the 1930s, police officers raided the home of Carl Tanzler, and they found the body of Elena de Hoyos, who had died several years earlier. He was preserving her body like a life-sized doll, and sleeping next to it every night. Rumors of his “corpse bride” spread throughout Key West, Florida so often, the true story and legend blended.
