One of the largest seabirds of the North Atlantic, the gannet is spectacular as it plunges into the sea in pursuit of fish. With a spear-like bill and spiky tail, it looks ‘pointed at both ends.’. Nesting colonies are on northern sea cliffs; one at Bonaventure Island, Quebec, has become a famous tourist destination.. These distinctive birds, being the largest gulls in the world, have a wingspan of up to 1.7 meters (5 feet, 7 inches) and grow to about 64 – 79 cm (25 – 31 inches) long. Great black-backed gulls are found in the Arctic locations of Iceland, northern Russia and Scandinavia, and southern Greenland, wintering as far south as Florida.

Great Northern Diver. This large heavy-billed seabird is a winter visitor to shallow coastal waters around Britain & Ireland, typically arriving during October and November. The only European breeding population is located in Iceland, although the species has a large Nearctic breeding population that stretches from the Aleutians across Canada.. A common loon’s iconic wail provides the summer soundtrack to northern waters. Their striking black and white breeding plumage and impressive ability to dive for fish captivate all who are lucky enough to spot them. We at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service want to tell you about one particularly impressive pair of common loons – a pair that’s made up of both of the oldest known common.
